Status Check

Tax Status Check

Tax matters come with their own set of statuses, from a return being processed to a refund being paid out. This guide covers the general ideas behind tax status checks in South Africa, tax refunds, returns, e-filing, compliance and clearance, and VAT.

Use only the official SARS channels

Tax refunds and compliance statuses should only be checked through the official SARS eFiling portal or MobiApp. Never share your tax number or banking details with third-party sites offering to check for you.

Tax returns and e-filing

After a tax return is submitted — whether on paper or through an official e-filing platform — it typically moves through stages such as "received," "under assessment," and "assessed" or "finalised." E-filing platforms usually let you log in to see exactly which stage your return has reached.

Tax refunds

If your assessment shows you're owed money back, a refund is usually processed automatically once your return is finalised and your banking details are verified. Refund timelines vary, and a delay often relates to a verification step or a mismatch in banking details, rather than a lost payment.

Tax compliance and clearance

Compliance status reflects whether your tax affairs are considered up to date, which can matter when applying for things like tenders, loans, or certain licences. A clearance status or certificate is often a formal confirmation of this, issued once any outstanding returns or payments have been resolved.

VAT status

For VAT-registered entities, a status check may relate to registration status, return submissions, or refund processing, and generally follows the same pattern of received, under review, and finalised stages.

A word of caution

Always check tax-related statuses through the official tax authority's own website or app, and never share your tax reference number, ID number, or banking details through unofficial sites or in response to unsolicited messages.
