An appeal status check shows where your appeal is in the review process: received, under review or decided. You usually check it on the same official website, app or service where you lodged the appeal, using your appeal or reference number. This guide explains how appeals generally work in South Africa, how to follow yours and what to do with the outcome.
Most organisations only accept appeals within a set number of days after the original decision. If you miss the window, you may lose your right to appeal that decision.
What Is an Appeal?
An appeal is a formal request asking an organisation to look again at a decision you disagree with. It is used when an application is declined, a payment is stopped, a claim is rejected or a licence is refused, among other situations. A successful appeal changes the original decision; an unsuccessful one leaves it as it was.
Some organisations first offer a reconsideration, where the same organisation reviews its own decision. Our guide to reconsideration status checks explains how the two differ.
What You Need Before You Check
- Your appeal reference number, or your original application number if no separate appeal number was given.
- Your ID or passport number.
- The phone number or email address you used when you lodged the appeal.
- The date you lodged the appeal, so you can see how long it has been.
How to Check Your Appeal Status
- Go to the official channel where you lodged the appeal.
- Open the appeals section. It may be listed as "Appeals", "Track appeal" or under your original application.
- Enter your reference number and identifying details exactly as before.
- Confirm your identity with a one-time PIN if asked.
- Read the status and any notes, then save a screenshot with the date.

The Appeal Process From Start to Finish
Most appeals follow the same general path:
- Decision received. You get a declined or unfavourable result, usually with a reason.
- Appeal lodged. You submit your appeal before the deadline, with your reasons and any supporting documents.
- Appeal received. The organisation records it and may give you a new reference number.
- Under review. A reviewer looks at the original decision and any new information.
- Information requested (sometimes). You may be asked for more documents.
- Decision made. The appeal is approved or declined.
- Outcome applied or further options. If approved, the original decision is changed. If declined, you may have further options.

What Each Appeal Status Means
| Status | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Appeal lodged or received | Your appeal has been recorded. | Keep your confirmation and reference number. |
| Pending or awaiting review | It is waiting for a reviewer. | Check once or twice a week. |
| Under review or in progress | Your appeal is being assessed. | Keep your contact details active. |
| Information requested | The reviewer needs more from you. | Respond quickly through the official channel. |
| Approved or upheld | The decision has been changed in your favour. | Watch for next steps or payment details. |
| Declined or dismissed | The original decision stands. | Read the reasons and check your remaining options. |
| Referred | Your appeal has been passed to another team or body. | Check for a new reference number or contact. |
| Closed or finalised | No further action will be taken. | Keep a record of the outcome. |
How Long Does an Appeal Take?
Appeal times vary a lot. Straightforward appeals can be decided within a few weeks, while appeals that need documents, investigations or hearings can take several months. Busy periods can add extra time. If you were given an expected timeframe, use it as your guide and only follow up once it has passed.
Tips for a Stronger Appeal
- Lodge it before the deadline. Late appeals are often not accepted.
- Respond to the reason given. Explain why the decision was wrong, not just that you disagree.
- Include proof. Documents that show your correct information carry more weight than statements alone.
- Check your personal details. Many decisions are caused by mismatched ID numbers, names or contact details.
- Lodge once. Duplicate appeals for the same decision can cause delays.
If Your Appeal Is Declined
A declined appeal doesn't always mean the end of the road. Depending on the organisation, you may be able to:
- Ask for a further review or reconsideration.
- Escalate to an independent review body, where one exists.
- Reapply once your circumstances change.
Your decision letter or status page usually explains which options are available and how long you have. For legal or complex matters, getting professional advice is wise.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I check my appeal status?
Usually on the same official website, app or service where you lodged the appeal. Some systems show it alongside your original application.
Do I get a new reference number for my appeal?
Sometimes. Check the confirmation you received when you lodged it. If none was given, use your original application number.
Can I add documents after lodging an appeal?
Often yes, especially if they support your reasons. Send them through the official channel and quote your reference number.
Will I be told when my appeal is decided?
Most organisations send an SMS, email or letter, but it is still worth checking the status yourself from time to time.
Can I appeal the same decision more than once?
Usually not. If your circumstances have changed, a new application may be the better route.
Can TYB lodge or check an appeal for me?
No. TYB is an independent guide site and has no access to any records. Only use official channels.
TYB is an independent information site and is not affiliated with any company, organisation or authority. Always confirm appeal rules and deadlines with the organisation that made the decision.
