Application Process
How long does it take to process my application?
Most applications are processed within 3 months. You'll receive a notification once approved or if additional information is needed.
What documents do I need to apply?
Basic requirements include: South African ID or birth certificate, proof of residence, and bank details (optional). Specific grants may require additional documents like medical reports or school enrollment certificates.
Can I apply online?
Currently, most grant applications must be submitted in person at SASSA offices. However, you can check application status online at the SASSA portal. Learn more about how to apply.
Payments
When will I receive my first payment?
First payments are typically made within 30 days of approval, at the start of the next payment cycle.
What are the payment dates?
Payments are made monthly on specific dates announced by SASSA. Older person grants are usually paid first week, disability grants second week, and child support grants third week of each month.
What if I lost my SASSA card?
Report it immediately to the SASSA fraud line at 0800 60 10 11. Visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID to request a replacement card. A fee may apply.
Can someone else collect my grant?
Yes, you can appoint a procurator (representative) if you're unable to collect yourself due to illness, disability, or other valid reasons. This must be arranged at a SASSA office.
Eligibility & Reviews
Do I need to reapply for my grant?
Most grants require periodic reviews (typically every 12 months). You'll be notified when a review is due. Child Support Grants are reviewed when the child turns certain ages.
What happens if my circumstances change?
You must report changes within 21 days, including: change of address, income changes, employment status, marriage, or death. Visit your nearest SASSA office or call the helpline.
Can I receive more than one grant?
Generally no, but there are exceptions. For example, you can receive an Older Person's Grant and a War Veterans Grant, or care for multiple children receiving Child Support Grants.
Problems & Appeals
What if my application is rejected?
You have the right to appeal within 90 days. Visit the SASSA office where you applied to submit an appeal with supporting documents explaining why you believe the decision was incorrect. Read more about the appeal process.
My grant payments stopped. What should I do?
Visit your nearest SASSA office immediately with your ID. Payments may stop due to: failed review, unreported changes, deceased beneficiary on the system, or administrative errors.
How do I report fraud?
Call the SASSA fraud hotline at 0800 60 10 11 or email [email protected]. You can report anonymously. Fraud includes false applications, identity theft, or corruption by officials.
