SASSA provides different types of social grants to support South Africans who need financial help. Each grant has specific requirements and benefits. Find the grant that's right for you or your family, then learn how to apply.
Old Age Pension
The Old Age Pension provides monthly financial support to elderly South Africans who need help covering their living costs.
Who Can Apply?
- You must be 60 years or older
- You must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee
- You must live in South Africa
- Your income and assets must be below a certain level
- You cannot be looked after in a state institution
How Much Will I Receive?
The grant amount is reviewed each year. The current monthly amount is available from your nearest SASSA office or our helpline.
What Documents Do I Need?
- Your ID document or birth certificate
- Proof of where you live (like a utility bill)
- Your bank statements for the last 3 months
- Proof of your income (if you have any)
Disability Grant
This grant helps people who cannot work because of a physical or mental disability. The disability must last for more than 6 months.
Who Can Apply?
- You must be between 18 and 59 years old
- You must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee
- You must live in South Africa
- You must have a medical report proving your disability
- Your disability must prevent you from working for more than 6 months
- You cannot be looked after in a state institution
Types of Disability Grants
Temporary Disability Grant: If your disability will last between 6 and 12 months.
Permanent Disability Grant: If your disability is permanent and will not get better.
What Documents Do I Need?
- Your ID document
- Medical report from a doctor (less than 3 months old)
- Proof of where you live
- Your bank statements for the last 3 months

How to ApplyChild Support Grant
The Child Support Grant helps caregivers provide for children under 18 years old. This is the most common grant in South Africa, helping millions of children.
Who Can Apply?
- You must be the primary caregiver of the child
- The child must be under 18 years old
- You and the child must be South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees
- You and the child must live in South Africa
- The child cannot be cared for in a state institution
- Your income must be below a certain level
What Documents Do I Need?
- Your ID document
- The child's birth certificate
- Proof of where you live
- Your bank statements for the last 3 months
- Proof of income (if you work)
- If you are not the parent: Proof that you care for the child
Good to know: You can apply for up to 6 children at the same time. Each child will need their own birth certificate. For questions about documents, see our FAQ section.
How to ApplyFoster Child Grant
This grant supports foster parents who care for children placed in their care by a court order. The amount is higher than the Child Support Grant because foster parents have full responsibility for the child.
Who Can Apply?
- You must be the foster parent of a child under 18 years old
- You must have a court order that placed the child in your care
- You and the child must be South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees
- You and the child must live in South Africa
What Documents Do I Need?
- Your ID document
- The child's birth certificate
- The court order placing the child in foster care
- Proof of where you live
Important: The foster care court order must be renewed every 2 years. Your grant will stop if the court order expires, so make sure to renew it on time.
How to ApplyCare Dependency Grant
This grant helps caregivers who look after children with severe disabilities. The child must need full-time care at home.
Who Can Apply?
- You must be the primary caregiver of a child under 18 years old
- The child must have a severe disability that needs full-time care
- You and the child must be South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees
- You and the child must live in South Africa
- The child cannot be cared for in a state institution
What Documents Do I Need?
- Your ID document
- The child's birth certificate
- Medical report from a doctor about the child's disability
- Proof of where you live
- Your bank statements for the last 3 months
Important: A SASSA medical officer will assess the child's disability. This assessment will determine if the child qualifies for the grant.
How to ApplyGrant-in-Aid
This is an extra grant for people who already receive an Old Age Pension, Disability Grant, or War Veterans Grant and need full-time care from another person.
Who Can Apply?
- You must already receive an Old Age Pension, Disability Grant, or War Veterans Grant
- You must need full-time care from another person because of your disability
- You cannot be cared for in a state institution
What Documents Do I Need?
- Your ID document
- Medical report from a doctor (less than 3 months old)
- Proof that you need full-time care
Good to know: This grant is paid in addition to your main grant. You don't have to choose between them.
How to ApplyWar Veterans Grant
This grant provides support to military veterans who served South Africa and are 60 years or older, or who are disabled because of their military service.
Who Can Apply?
- You must be a military veteran who served in a military force
- You must be 60 years or older, or unable to work due to an injury from your service
- You must be a South African citizen or permanent resident
- You must live in South Africa
What Documents Do I Need?
- Your ID document
- Proof of your military service
- Medical report (if applying based on disability)
- Proof of where you live
